Held every two years, the SCI Mountain Challenge is a test of endurance inspired by mariners that takes place on land and water to raise awareness and funds for the Seaman’s Church Institute (SCI) and its mariner support services. The 2017 event was held from September 28 to October 1 in Sunday River, Maine, and the Cooper Group was in participation.
Team Cooper Consolidated was comprised of Erik Cooper, Wendell Landry, and Chris Blanchard, and Cooper Mooring’s Anthony Almerico competed with Weber Marine. These teammates pushed themselves in a race against the elements and isolation, ascending more than 3,000 feet each day as they ran and hiked mountain trails and paddled canoes for more than 11 miles.
Founded in 1834, SCI is the largest mariners’ agency in North America. SCI chaplains visit thousands of vessels along America’s inland waterways extending into the Gulf of Mexico, and SCI Centers for Maritime Education provide training to 1,600 mariners annually.
Team Cooper Consolidated raised $14,333 for SCI, and the 2017 event as a whole raised more than $317,000.
